About

I am Monali

My route to becoming a photographer has been an unusual one. While
growing up, I was more interested in scientific than creative
thinking, which led to a relatively straight-line career progression
into medical school. During one of the few bits of downtime in med
school, I realized that I had always been fascinated with pictures and
why some photographs seemed to be capable of creating treasured,
lifelong memories. With the help of some friends to get me started, I
began experimenting with street photography in India, and enjoyed it
enough that I expected it to be a long-term, fulfilling hobby. Over
the next few years, I continued to use the raw emotion and color on
display on the streets of India as a backdrop for creating art.

After finishing school, I moved to Phoenix to do medical research. Two
important things happened here: firstly, I met the wonderful man who
would go on to become my husband (and who really is the wind beneath
my wings!). Secondly, I spent more and more of my weekends on
photography related things – from joining meetups with other creative
folks and experimenting with lighting to attending workshops and
seminars – until I realized that much as I loved surgery , I truly
valued the opportunity to create lasting documents of fleeting moments
of time too.

I apprenticed with a number of photographers before we moved to New
York and settled down on wedding photography. I’m well aware that
documenting this special moment in people’s lives is a huge
responsibility and am honored that so many people have trusted me on
their big day! In my images, I try and blend my love of psychology and
people’s emotions with the technical bits of lighting and angles to
create wonderful results that exceed your expectations.
